sometimes doula work is an uphill sprint 🏃🏼‍♀️

it’s having questions but no one to ask them too!
it’s supporting families through chaos and back!
it’s answering questions sometimes involving medical care and having to give an informed, non bias answer even when it feels wrong.

sometimes it feels like they don’t care. sometimes I realize that even my brain starts to appropriate their actions because of how frequent they happen 👎🏻

I suggest childbirth education for all the families, hire the doulas, do the work, don’t let yourself become a number!

getting diagnosed with gestational diabetes is SO rude when it comes to families planning home births with limited intervention!

why you ask?? 👇🏻

because needing insulin requires a transfer of care to an OB and a diabetes clinic, leaving your midwife to be hands off in delivery BUT they still can be active in your care + postpartum experience!

PS also even the healthiest of healthiest can end up being diagnosed! don’t be hard on yourself mama 🤍

now we can advocate for all things, like avoiding induction, having your midwife there, managing with diet & lifestyle..

BUT

what do phones do? SET OFF YOUR HORMONES!!
what do we need in labour? GOOD HAPPY HORMONES!!

because that will reduce the risk of needing pitocin 😘
which reduces SO so much more risk for you & baby!

when we watch TikTok or IG during labour once we’ve relaxed from the epidural - our hormones are all over the place! We have adrenaline from watching a scary video and then we feel a rush of endorphins from watching a hype up video and then we feel sadness from watching a loss video and your body cannot process all of these while trying to have a baby!

Yes, of course you can text your mom to update her lol but NO scrolling! No facebook. No instagram. We need oxytocin!

We need natural hormones at play.

We need a focused body system & baby.

We need teamwork!

So if you grab your epidural, toss your phone into playing your birth playlist and have a nice nap instead 💖

our C-section rate in Alberta has SKYROCKETED the past year basically being 1 in TWO!

And why would that reason be???

The convenience of induction for non medical reasons 🛎️

If we could Amazon prime order our babies we probably would.. So an elective induction for a first time mom at 38 weeks sounds great!

Until it turns into the cascade of interventions 😳

Your baby isn’t ready. Their lungs aren’t ready. Their descent into the pelvis is harder. They might not be in the right spot.

Induction pain doesn’t cross the blood brain barrier meaning you don’t get the natural pain relief your body creates for natural labour either 🥴

Sooo 👊🏼

Start asking questions about the ARRIVE trial and how the results weren’t exactly true..
Ask if it’s a medical emergency or just care practioners coercion…
And be your babies first voice. Protect them and yourself 🤝🏼

if someone threatening my child’s safety, I would lift a bus. I would fight a bear. So how is my body that grew this baby and keeps them safe - going to be the one that apparently harms them??

she wanted to do extended cord clamping over 60seconds, he said no. that her baby will get jaundice and die.

she asked if they could wait until labour starts spontaneously instead of the 40 week induction they recommended. He said no. that babies die for fun after 39 weeks so it’s better for them to be here.

she asked how many times he had supported unmedicated birth and he replied “it’s much easier for me if you get an epidural just incase I need to cut an episiotomy or take you for an emergency C-section”

And that’s when she realized.
She never wanted to see him again.

What an odd thing to say. That your baby will die. That you have no choice. That you aren’t in control - they are.

You are.

because they are forced into any choices or medications

How do we navigate the pressure to induce, to have pain management, to be traumatized when it comes from our direct circle? The lack of education in that circle and the clear violations that happened to them without even knowing.

I see this so often.

First time mamas, I hear you.

You are learning. It’s a hard world. The algorithm LOVES to bombard you with all the things and it’s overwhelming.

holiday inductions seem to be a popular offering to create convenience for care practitioners & their teams. BUT this can mean the spiral of interventions for your labour increases by a TON 📈

So here is a few tricks to help sniff out the truth & advocate in this situation 👇🏻

🛑 Is this a real medical emergency or just a recommendation?

🛑 Is there any evidence to support this induction? What are the risks? Does it align with the birth goals we’ve set?

🛑 Can we wait a few days and see if things change or happen spontaneously?

🛑 What care practitioners are on call over the holidays? Can I meet them to plan if they are my OB?

And really consider if induction is right for you! Are you okay with an epidural? Are you okay with the risks of pitocin? Are you comfortable with a cesarean birth? These all matter 🎅

So let your baby pick their birthday, having a holiday baby is not a crime or an inconvenience! The will have staff on and ready to support you no matter what 🎄

midwifery violence happens, let’s talk about it.

I’ve seen it. I’ve been bullied. I’ve watched my clients births be destroyed. Bait and switches. It’s SO hard.

No one is guaranteed the birth that they’re striving for which is really hard to admit, but also when you’re searching for repercussions for a birth team that truly acted out of scope and didn’t support you the way they should have - I feel that frustration.

No action was taken for trauma. For no consent. For harm. For denial of care. For sexual abuse. Almost two years later they have gotten no apology and been ignored.

I’ve truly seen this happen to many families all over the country who have ended up in my DMs telling me their journeys.

We hear you.
We support you.
We strive to find justice with you.

I’ve loved working with midwives for the experience they give families and have seen it all, but that care is not guaranteed for all families.

So together, we will fight this together, I will try to help you use your voice and I will always remember your journey 🤍
